Chicago Middle School Debate Champions!
Congratulations to our middle school debaters, who concluded their season at the Chicago Middle School Debate Championship on March 25. The tournament, sponsored by Third Coast Underwriters and hosted at Taft High School, brought together almost 300 students from 22 schools for an exciting day of competition.
Chris and Victor from Skinner West became our Varsity City Champions after defeating Lauren and Natasha from Peirce, who took home 2nd place. Chris was 3rd speaker while Victor was 6th speaker. Congratulations to @Old St. Mary’s for capping a successful season. Isabella and Stacia took home 3rd place while Zoe and Isabel won 4th. Isabella earned 2nd speaker, Zoe earned 4th speaker, and Stacia earned 5th speaker. South Loop also had a strong finish, with the Meghan and Miles taking home the 5th place team award and the 7th and 8th place speaker awards.
Congratulations to Colin from Sacred Heart for finishing as the top Varsity speaker! Nicole from Ogden also deserves recognition as the tournament’s 9th speaker.
Our JV City Champions were Lincoln’s Etta (4th speaker) and Janah (8th speaker), defeating Nia (3rd speaker) and Campbell (the top speaker) from Skinner West. From Lincoln, Cole (7th speaker) and David won 3rd place, and Graeme (5th speaker) and Gustavo won 4th place. Salma and Parker from South Loop had a strong 5th place finish, with Salma earning 2nd speaker.
In Novice, we saw impressive performances, with the top six teams all boasting undefeated prelim records. Ultimately, Kristina and Morgan from Thorp emerged our City Champion, defeating @Sacred Heart’s Sean and Aaron who took 2nd. Congratulations to Barbara and Gabby from Bessie Rhodes for finishing in 3rd place, and Jack and Amanda from Old St. Mary’s for 4th.
Julie from Skinner West was our top Novice speaker and Zach from South Loop was 2nd speaker.
Finally, we’d like to congratulate the winners of our Debater of the Year awards: Our 6th Grader of the Year was Morgan from Thorp; our 7th Grader of the Year was Rei from Ogden; and our 8th Grader of the Year was Doniya from Kershaw. These debaters showed outstanding leadership and character throughout the season and we’re very proud to recognize them for it!
