In this role, Derrick is the CEO of quality management when executing debate curriculum, tournament operations, and fostering meaningful relationships within the community. As a Program Officer for School Support, Derrick works to develop strong relationships with our partnering schools to ensure tournaments run smoothly, foster environments for students to expand their mental horizons, and aid in creating the leaders of tomorrow.

Previously, Derrick worked for United Parcel Service for over six  years.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts  in Philosophy from Christian Brothers University (Memphis, TN) and a Master of Science in Business Management & Leadership from Western Governor University (Salt Lake City, UT). While in college, Derrick was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc; the Student Government Association; Black Student Association; and the Gay-Straight Alliance.

“I take what we do here at Chicago Debates seriously because we are touching lives one interaction at a time,” he says. My debate coach Marian Crooks used to always say, ‘when you leave this world, what are they going to remember you by?’ and as an adult, I can say being the best ‘debate dad’ I can be while bringing back the true meaning of service in public service.”

When he’s not wearing one of his many professional hats, Derrick is “continuously on the pursuit of happiness and maintaining peace of mind.” This includes yoga, meditation, skating, bowling, cooking, amusement parks, and spending quality time with friends and family.

In the future, Derrick hopes to achieve two Ph.Ds (in Africana Studies and Public Policy); getting certified as a doula; traveling; opening his own skating rink while running his own debate league.

Fun fact: Derrick volunteered with Chicago Debates as a judge since July 2018.
