Make Room for Debate 2013

Our second annual Make Room for Debate fundraiser, held on June 27, was a terrific success because the generosity of almost 250 guests and 36 individual and corporate sponsors.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle was honored with the Champion of Debate award. President Preckwinkle spoke about her commitment to improving educational and life opportunities for Chicago youth, while promoting transparency, accountability, and collaboration in government. Rick Godfrey, partner at Kirkland & Ellis, Event Chair, also spoke at the event, as did Akeshia Craven-Howell, Officer of CPS’ Office of Pathways to College and Career. Check out the video of Craven-Howell’s speech on our YouTube channel!

In addition to the award presentation, the luncheon also featured four top student debaters from the CDL in an exhibition debate on this year’s debate topic, transportation infrastructure. Tracy Carson, a CDL alumna, gave a moving reflection on the transformative impact of debate participation on her life.

Thanks to all of our luncheon sponsors.
