We work directly with principals to establish and then support debate teams at our schools. We help principals recruit coaches from their teaching staff, and then work directly with coaches to help build their debate teams and get them competitive.
Coach Support and Professional Development:
Chicago Debates recruits and supports about 140 debate coaches each year – most of them classroom teachers. We provide nearly 700 hours of professional development via workshops, school visits, webinars and more.
Chicago Debates runs approximately 35 tournaments each year, giving each of our debaters the opportunity to test their skills through competition. We are responsible for finding locations, recruiting volunteer judges, and operating everything from tabulating results to serving the meals.
Chicago Debates Summer Institute:
Chicago Debates runs a two-week summer camp for middle school and high school students, keeping them engaged in learning during the summer months and preparing them for a successful launch of the school year.
Research and Resources:
Chicago Debates provides intensive research to teams known as Core Files, in order to help them stay up to date with the current year’s topic. These materials model high-quality debate argument structure and proper use of evidence.
